CIGI HOLDS FIRST MILLING PROGRAM FOR SPANISH CUSTOMERS

The Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI) will hold its first Spain-Canada Milling Program in Winnipeg, July 20-24. The program will provide milling representatives from Spain information on the Canadian grain handling and quality control systems and focus on the quality characteristics and advantages of CWRS over competitor wheats.

The seven participants will attend classroom presentations as well as hands-on technical sessions in CIGI’s analytical services, and milling and baking technology areas, says Len Seguin, Director of Cereal Technology. The group will also visit a farm, primary elevator, Canadian Grain Commission, and the Canadian Wheat Board which is sponsoring the program.

“Spain is a long-standing market for Canadian wheat, where it is used in the production of a wide range of breads as well as pasta,” he says. “This program provides an opportunity to reinforce our relationship with Spanish customers through formal sessions as well as informal discussion with Canadian industry representatives.”

Spain has consistently been one of the top five importers of Canadian wheat in Western Europe. It has purchased an average of nearly 190,000 tonnes annually since 2003, including 49,000 tonnes of durum wheat.

CIGI is a non-profit market development organization dedicated to promoting Canada’s field crops in domestic and international markets through educational programming and technical activities. Core funding for CIGI is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Wheat Board. Additional funds and support are provided by other sectors of the agriculture industry. Since 1972, CIGI has hosted more than 30,000 participants from 114 countries.
