CIGI GRAIN INDUSTRY PROGRAM HELD FOR CUSTOMERS FROM 13 COUNTRIES

Representatives from 13 countries are attending the 43rd International Grain Industry Program at the Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI) in Winnipeg. Starting July 5, the two-week program will offer international customers classroom and technical demonstrations on Canadian grains including an introduction to the Canadian industry, inspection and grading, handling, transportation, marketing, and technology.

The 19 participants represent trading organizations, mills and processing companies from United Arab Emirates, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. In addition, two representatives from the Canadian Wheat Board, which is sponsoring the program, and one from the Canadian Grain Commission are attending.

“The program aims to improve international customers’ understanding of the Canadian grain industry,” says Rick Morgan, CIGI Manager of Business Development and director of the program. “This will be done through presentations, discussions and hands-on demonstrations in CIGI’s pilot facilities that will give them an opportunity to experience the processes involved with milling, baking, Asian products, pasta, special crops and analytical services. They will also have a chance to meet with representatives from the Canadian industry.”

The group will tour a grain farm, primary elevator, the Canadian Grain Commission, Canadian Wheat Board and Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre. During the last few days of the program, they will travel across Western Canada and tour a terminal elevator and Port Vancouver.

Since 1972 more than 32,000 people representing grain, oilseed, pulse and special crops industries from 114 countries have participated in CIGI programs and seminars. CIGI is a non-profit market development organization with a vision to be the recognized leader specializing in offering continuous advances in Canadian field crop products to the world. Core funding is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Wheat Board. Additional funds and support are provided by other sectors of the agriculture industry.
