FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 11, 2010 CARIBBEAN REPRESENTATIVES ATTEND CIGI MILLING PROGRAMWINNIPEG – Milling industry representatives from 11 countries are attending a five-day Caribbean-Canada Milling Program at the Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI) in Winnipeg. Starting June 14, the program features classroom instruction and technical demonstrations pertaining to Canadian wheat with a focus on Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS). The 15 participants represent trading organizations, mills and processing companies from Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Saint Vincent, and Trinidad and Tobago. One representative from the Canadian Wheat Board, which is sponsoring the program, is also attending. “The program will concentrate on increasing participants’ awareness of the processing qualities and applications of CWRS, with discussion and hands-on sessions in the areas of milling, baking, noodles, pasta and laboratory analysis,” says Larry Taylor, CIGI Director of Technology and Programs. “Subjects will include grading, varietal research, marketing, milling and end-use processing. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet and talk with Canadian industry representatives.” In addition to attending sessions at CIGI, participants will tour a farm, primary elevator, the Canadian Grain Commission and Canadian Wheat Board. Since 1972 more than 31,000 people representing grain, oilseed, pulse and special crops industries from 114 countries have participated in CIGI programs and seminars. CIGI is a non-profit market development organization with a vision to be the recognized leader specializing in offering continuous advances in Canadian field crop products to the world. Core funding is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Wheat Board.
